The Advisory Committee: Linking Academic Science to Real World Policy and Resource Management

Although efforts to conduct science and manage marine resources are often fragmented by isolated institutions, SLOSEA’s Advisory Committee works to overcome these challenges. As a multi-jurisdictional body, the Advisory Committee identifies actions that local, state, and federal agencies can take to help the community reach its goals. In addition, the Committee suggests research projects to Cal Poly scientists that would be beneficial to on-going resource management processes. In 2008 SLOSEA worked with this body to create a strategic plan for protecting the local ecosystem. It was from this effort that SLOSEA's six initiatives were identified: regional sustainable fisheries, water quality, climate change, invasive species, protecting coastal habitats, and sustainable marine economies/ working waterfronts.
